Delta Quartet perform with flair and panache

The works of 6 living composers – including 3 associated with the University – featured in Friday’s superb concert at Surrey by the Delta Saxophone Quartet on their 30th anniversiary tour.  Contemporary music for saxophone quartet may not be to everybody’s taste, but this concert was certainly something of a hidden gem, exemplifying the Quartet’s range and versatility in the intimate playing of Steve Goss’s Uneasy Dreams, the frenetic passagework of Run Riot by Marc Anthony Turnage, and the complexity of Steve Reich’s New York Counterpoint. The extensive spoken introductions provided by players and composers before each piece were a welcome touch that enhanced the programme’s accessibility to the non-specialist audience.
