Dan Rolfe, Regional Manager for East Asia, talks about his role in the International Recruitment Office

dAN 2I studied Business Management at Surrey and completed my professional training year with the UK/EU Student Recruitment team. After graduating in 2012, I worked in the International team before taking up a role at SOAS University of London. I re-joined the team in February as the Regional Manager for East Asia.

I’m responsible for student recruitment in East Asia, with country responsibility for Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan. I regularly travel overseas to promote the University in these countries. I often attend education exhibitions, visit schools & universities and meet with our in-country representatives. It’s important for me to keep up to the date with developments in the countries I look after, and to ensure students are supported through the application process. My role involves working closely with colleagues across the University to attract the best students each year. I also contribute to our Twitter feed @SurreyInt!

Supporting students through their journey to Surrey is really rewarding. Lots of students start thinking about university the year before they apply, so I keep in touch with them before, during and after they apply to us. It’s great to see students that I have helped arrive at the University in September. I work closely with colleagues in Student Support, and I enjoy helping to ‘Meet & Greet’ our new international students at the airport each September, and often see them again throughout the year at social events the International Support team organise. I’m fortunate that my role allows me to interact with lots of staff from across the University, and work with our current students through the International Student Ambassador scheme, which I really enjoy.
