My Way to Surrey

When I decided to Apply for Surrey

Hello, everyone! Today I will talk about my way to Surrey; from the point when I decided to apply for Surrey until the day I received the offer for my course.

It was in autumn 2014 when I decided to apply for postgraduate studies at Surrey (The photo was taken back then, in the island of Zakinthos, Greece). I was working at the Embassy of Japan in Greece as an Administration Officer at that time, and I was about to start my last year of the 3 years contract in Athens. Thinking of my future ahead, I realised once again that my long-term dream was to promote Japan and Japanese culture so as to attract a bigger number of people from abroad. I considered the two options: to find a job in this field and to go to university to complete postgraduate studies. Because I had in my mind to stay and work abroad for a while, I thought it would be a better option to study and earn a master’s degree first, believing that the degree may give me more opportunities. I decided to apply for Surrey because of its best reputation for Tourism in Europe and its high ranking as a whole university.

I was clearly aware of what to do after my decision; in October, I attended the IELTS preparation course at the British Council in Greece and sat for the exam, contacted my university in Tokyo to receive the transcript of academic record and the certificate of graduation, and asked for the recommendation letters from my professor at the university in Tokyo and my boss (Ambassador of Japan in Greece). At the same time, I started writing my personal statement, with the support of the agents in Greece and Cyprus. It was difficult for me to contact the agents in Japan constantly as I was living abroad, although receiving their support through Skype and phone calls is also possible.

I completed my application in the middle of February, and received the unconditional offer about a month later. The keys for successful application are: start to take an action early (usually a year in advance to the date the school year starts), ask for as much help as possible from others (what you can do by yourself is limited), and make it clear why you want to study at the specific university, not others. If you have any questions or inquiries concerning application process, please feel free to contact me.
