Day trips – Ascot Racecourse

Hello! Today I thought I would start with the first post of what will hopefully become a regular series on this blog. The series will be about the different day trips I have been able to participate in throughout the semester. The University of Surrey’s Students’ Union organizes these great day trips for a really good price and they happen almost every weekend. I have been able to go on three different trips this semester but am hoping to do even more next semester.

So the first trip I participated going to the Ascot Racecourse on Champions Day for a mere 7 pounds. There is a dress code at these events so Kellie, Heather and I went hat shopping for the occasion which was a lot of fun. There is a great little store near High Street named The Mad Hatter which is worth window shopping at and chatting with the owner.

The bus picked us up at 10am and was scheduled to return to campus at 8pm. The venue itself was really spectacular and people were dressed very smart which added to the atmosphere. We got to watch long distance and sprint horse races which was almost as exciting as watching a hockey game given that people were cheering just as loudly (and drinking beer just as much). As we were watching the races we actually spotted the Queen who was watching from the royal box. I also found a Canadian Waffle which I got really excited about obviously.

We ended our day at a pub for some food before heading off to the bus. In all, I had such a great timeĀ and we all felt very British for the day. In the next post of this seriesĀ I am hoping to write about my day in Oxford.

Cheers!
