Why the caged bird sings deliberately.

English version underneath.

Inspired from the poem ‘Sympathy’ by Paul Laurence Dunbar

English Version :

Why the caged bird sings deliberately.

Inspired from the poem ‘Sympathy’ by Paul Laurence Dunbar

This letter is to every bird who is caught in a cage.

To you, who sings too deliberately,

Oh little bird, dearest little bird, do you see the meadows and the sea out there, out of the cage, out of the window? You sing with your sore bosom until your breast expands to breaking point, and you beat your wings until they bleed, your eyes are already fixated towards the blue skies and the green fields without a hint of movement. I know too, I know the dream inside a cage. Crying for friends and companions, fluttering your wings for the knowledge and experience outside the cage. You exhibit confident shoulders and with a loud voice, you sing to let yourself be known, your voice and your beauty, you think it’s meant to be known to the world. Yes, I know, I know too, I know the desperation inside a cage. You, who practice unyielding and unwavering every day to have a better voice than that bird in the cage next doors to you, You, who sing louder for more food and better treats, You, who sing to satisfy your owner. I know, Yes I do, I know the greed inside a cage. Do you sing because the bird next doors sing a lot and practices a lot and you think you have to do so as well? Are you angry and full of angst because that human outside the cage don’t listen to your singing? Is it not tiring, this life? This life, living supposedly being “productive” and “working hard”? I know, I understand, I know what purpose means inside a cage.

Let me ask you one thing, are you happy singing and crying towards that ideal you can never reach being caged? Do not lie to me that because you got ‘closer’ to your dream you’re happy, despite all the expanded breasts, hitting your wings on the cage wall, and eyes opened big and wide. Do you think the eagle up there soaring in the skies is just ‘lucky’ for being born as an eagle? If you work so hard trying to get out of the cage and then just reason the eagle is free because its lucky, then isn’t that hypocritical and pessimistic? Then why do you even try? Do not fit yourself into this theory of luck or some kind of deterministic faith. Life and this world is actually more beautiful than you think. Where did the strange idea of fearing the future and fearing death come from? If all you can tell me is that from your observation, all the other birds, the birds who have lived before you, and the society of birds tell you that, then all I can say is “why are you building another cage inside your cage?”.

Oh little bird, dearest little bird who wants to be free, give me a chance to express life’s beauty to you. That cage is not a cage that will be gone by your owner because you sing and beat your wings. They’re not going to let you free, can you not see? You sing and dance! What a sight right? They’ll want you more and more. It’s also not a cage you are responsible to be in, only because you weren’t born as an eagle. The cage is, in fact, your greed and worries, your expectations and anxiety, your compulsion and closed mind, and it’s your pride and prejudice. I know, I know the freedom outside of the cage. The cage, which is actually imaginary, is what you have, and what the system and society of bird culture have put on you/yourself. This especially originates from these 2 poisons: Fear and Satisfaction. I know, I know as I’ve looked inside from out of the cage. Never be to tranced by the bird feed that your owner gives you. When the bird feed becomes a dream and an ambition, from being an important food source, it becomes a fear of “Will I have enough supply of bird feed in the future?” and the satisfaction of collecting and eating bird feed will make you forget about everything and imprison you in the cage.

Simply speaking, we have to live simply! We have to let it go. Our purpose as birds is very straightforward. Isn’t it to enjoy this life and be happy in this life that we’ve been given? It is to live as free beings flying through the endless sky and exploring the unfathomable beauty of the fields. Then why are we singing so hard and beating our wings so hard as we do? Getting out of the cage is what you yourself have to do. Nobody can directly help you out of the cage, it starts with your choice. Let’s live more comfortably. When you are out of the cage and look back at your times in the cage, most of the times you don’t understand why you had to endure those hard times for something so trivial after all. With time and situation everything changes and becomes okay. We can’t change the past and we can’t see the future. That is why we have to only focus on creating the now and make your own story at the now, not regretting the past or preparing the future. Let us remove fear from our lives. If you enjoy what you do, the things that get you out of your seat however big or small, then everything will be provided in the end. We just have to be careful we don’t fall into the trap of luck and deterministic faith. Once you fall into the trap of luck, then you notice that being a beggar is the easiest thing to do, you earn without the necessity of work.

The bird inside the cage tries too hard deliberately singing more exaggerated and louder to show him/herself in order to escape the cage. All I am wanting to say is that you can approach it more slowly and carefully just making your own story. If you chirp and tweet like all the other birds trying hard, and all that, where is the fun? And your dream becomes a thing on a to do list, not something you feel like you want to do it first thing when you wake up. On the other hand, if you enjoy slowly making your own story, flying to places uncharted, re-decorating the cage, and finding out what kind of a bird you are, painting own colours to your feathers, then life becomes comfortable and enjoyable and worthwhile. Sometimes once you come out of the cage, the apparent busy life style the caged birds have may seem like they are actually doing something purposely active. Yet, whenever this happens, remember what it means to be in the cage, you came out of the cage because it does not suit you. Think about why you are out, why you painted your colours in your own colours. Get rid of that fear of missing out. Slowly, just go your own way, exploring your happiness and meet wind and companions that help your flight. When you meet downward wind or trees that hurt you, just let it go, do not try to befriend those elements cause they look cool and seem good. If you try to get close you will get hurt. There is a time and space for everything. Don’t worry that friends and companions are not coming to you, don’t worry that there is no good wind, it is only that it is not your time yet. Do not deliberately sing inside the cage, but come out and live deliberately, fly and soar. I know, I really do know the happiness of the outside of the cage.

With all my heart,

A red-hearted bird who recently came out of the cage

I close this piece of writing with the hope that with more letters and writings, you will learn what it is to be living out of a cage.
