Surrey Surf Club

Find out everything you need to know about Surrey Surf Club by reading our interview with Tom!

Please introduce yourself – what year are you in? What degree do you study? Some of your interests?

Hi, my name’s Tom, I’m a 4th year Mechanical Engineering student currently on a placement year. I’ll be coming back to uni next year to be the next President of Surf Club, and also to do a Master’s.

What does your society stand for? Can you tell us a little bit about what you do?

We don’t take ourselves too seriously, we’re a pretty chilled out bunch that focus on having a good time and we try to catch a few waves while we’re at it. Members often say after joining, we have an ‘extended family’ feel to the club.

Are there any benefits from purchasing the membership? Society social cards? Etc

Lots! You’ll get a member’s t-shirt, membership pack and a discount card to use with our range of sponsors.

How do you join your society?

I had a few friends that went on trips in 1st year, they said I’d love it, so I booked a place on the Freshers Trip in my 2nd year and I’ve been on pretty much every trip since then! You can join the society via our website.

Is there a membership fee to join? If so what does this cover?

Yep, so it’s £20 for the year and it gives you access to come on all UK & abroad trips.

Do you hold any social events? If so what are they?

Our main events are obviously our surf trips – over the year we do 4 weekends away within the UK, a BUCS competition, plus Surf Tour (a week-long trip aboard over Easter!). In between all the trips, we also do plenty of socials based in Surrey as well.

As a fresher, it may be a bit daunting to attend a social when they do not know anyone. What’s your best advice for freshers?

Come and sign up to our ‘Fresher’s Trip’, it’s a trip designated solely to welcoming new members to the club.

Also, people often think they have to already be able to surf to join the club, that’s not the case. I’d say roughly 80% of members had never surfed before coming to uni!

Does the society organise any trips that are relevant to your degree?

Not really, but they’re great fun!

Can you purchase society clothing?

You can indeed, we do trip t-shirts, hoodies and have even been known to do robies as well!

Could you tell us a little about being on a committee? Highlights and challenges…

I’ve only been doing it for a few weeks, but already it’s been great getting to work with a new bunch of people. I’m getting a new appreciation for how much work goes on behind the scenes to keep the club running.

What’s your fondest memory as a society member?

Cop out, but too many to choose from, being involved with the club has definitely been the highlight of my student experience!

Why do you think people should join your society?

It’s a great way of getting to meet a new group of people outside of your course/flatmates. It’s also a great way of trying out a new sport, in a very relaxed environment and get to see some different parts of the country while you’re at it.
