Some of our mentors have been working towards a ‘Learning Through Experience Certificate’ over the past few months, where they have the opportunity to think about the skills they are developing as a mentor throughout the year. Students who opt to work towards this certificate attend an active listening workshop, work on a critical reflection task within a group, produce either a reflective report or concept map, and then give a 5 minute presentation about their growth as a mentor throughout the year.
This morning we heard from mentors giving their presentations about how beneficial they have found the role. Not only have they gained personal insight into all the services on campus, they also talked about how they have developed themselves such as developing their confidence and self awareness; conflict resolution and problem solving skills; cultural awareness; and pride in what their mentees – as well as themselves – have achieved in the mentor/ mentee role. It was also encouraging to hear that mentors felt that the training that we had provided them at the start of the year had offered them skills for life. Excellent!
