Recently, I have been selected to participate in a workshop entitled “Latin American eScience Workshop 2013 – Turning data into insight” held in Sao Paulo, Brazil 13-15 May 2013. Fifty-four students from Brazil and abroad were chosen among 240 applicants to join the workshop. We had all the costs of travel and accommodation supported by FAPESP and Microsoft Research, and I had the opportunity to present my research to about 200 participants. The event brought together researchers, scientists and students from all over the world to explore collaboration and research opportunities in areas such as Computer Vision, Environmental Sciences, Bioenergy, Biogenetics, Biodiversity, Health and Digital Humanities. In other words, promoting and fostering the eScience research community. This workshop provided us a platform to either acquire or improve our know-how in data-intensive research; we also had the chance to visit the University of Sao Paulo and discover research opportunities and collaborations with researchers in Brazil. We surely did enjoy the atmosphere of Sao Paulo, the social events and more importantly the coconuts!
