A new beginning. This is what University is for me: a fresh chapter full of opportunities to explore and memories to cherish forever. It’s a time for me to learn, grow and discover who I really am. I joined Surrey in 2024 during the September intake, and this is how it’s been so far.
Hello!!
Let me introduce myself first. My name is Surabhi Mitra. I am a first-year student at Surrey, studying International Hospitality Management. I am currently in my second semester and studying at the University of Surrey has been an exciting and enriching experience so far.

University was a big transition from school, and when I first came here, everything was very new to me: the country, the food, the people-everything felt unfamiliar. Especially as an international student, I felt a disconnect from home and had a hard time adjusting to this new place.
However, I was determined to change things for myself. In the weeks before classes started, there were many events taking place, from open classes to sports events, crafts and whatnot. I decided to attend as many of these events as I could, including the fresher’s fair, a society event and a dance audition, all in hopes of meeting new people and immersing myself in the university experience. This was one of the best decisions I’ve made. It made me open up and built my confidence, and I met some of my closest friends through these events.
My first semester was all about finding my way at university and adjusting to a new routine. It was a time of self-discovery, figuring out how to balance studies, social life, and personal time. The university presented me with many opportunities, both in and out of classes, that made me step out of my comfort zone and build a life here.
Now, in my second semester, I feel more confident and settled. I’ve gained a better understanding of what I want to focus on academically and personally. However, I am still eager to discover what else the University has in store for me in the years ahead.
Moving to the UK and joining this University was one of the toughest decisions that I’ve ever made, but as time passed, everything seemed to fall into place. Surrey has offered me a wide range of activities and continues to do so, giving me a chance to grow and be a better version of myself every single day.
With each new experience, I’ve met incredible people, embraced new challenges and gained a sense of belonging.
And just like that, the university has become my second home.
