How Surrey supports International students

Hello everyone, my name is Risper Okello, currently in my final year of my undergraduate studies in BSc Economics and Finance. Studying at the University of Surrey as an international student has been a journey filled with both highs and lows. I moved from Kenya for the very first time to study in the UK, and starting a completely new chapter of life can feel overwhelming at times. You are not only adjusting academically, but also personally, learning to navigate a new environment, often without the immediate support of family.

One of the biggest challenges I faced was homesickness and the pressure of figuring everything out on my own. Culture shock is real, and at times it can bring feelings of self-doubt or even imposter syndrome. You may question whether you truly belong or if you will be accepted in a new space. These feelings can be discouraging and may even affect your academic performance and overall well-being. However, what stood out to me at Surrey is the strong support system available for students. The Centre for Wellbeing and services like ThriveWell provide a safe and confidential space where you can talk openly about your challenges. Having access to such support made a significant difference in helping me adjust and feel more grounded during difficult moments.

Academically, my journey also had its turning point. When I first arrived, I realised that the course I had chosen was not the right fit for me. At the time, it felt like I had made a huge mistake, especially as an international student, where the stakes often feel much higher. However, with the support of my personal tutor and the International Student Advice Team, I was able to successfully transition into my current course that aligns with my interests. Their guidance not only helped me make the change but also supported me in catching up, especially given that the transition period had elapsed.

In addition to academic support, Surrey also provides excellent career guidance. The Careers Advice team played a key role in helping me understand the UK job market. From improving my CV and cover letters to preparing for applications and deadlines, their advice has been invaluable. They also offer guidance on placements, including the pros and cons, and support with visa extensions – something that can seem daunting at first but is made much more manageable with the right help.

What I particularly appreciated was the level of support even before arriving in the UK. The International Student Arrival Guide and pre-arrival webinars provided useful insights into what to expect. I also received a lot of support from the International Recruitment team who stayed in contact with both me and my parents, offering reassurance and answering our questions. This personalised support made the transition feel much less intimidating. The International Early Arrival Week for international students was another highlight. It gave us the opportunity to settle in before the academic year began setting up bank accounts, registering with a GP, and getting familiar with Guildford. These small but essential steps made a huge difference in helping me feel prepared and confident.

Now, as an International student ambassador myself, I can truly see the effort Surrey puts into supporting students from all backgrounds. From pre-arrival to post-arrival and beyond, the university ensures that every student feels welcomed, supported, and equipped to succeed. Surrey is more than just a place to study; it is a community that genuinely cares about your journey!
