We are changing the way we login to e-resources by moving over to Single-Sign-On. When this is complete there will be
- No need for a cookie
- No need for the Secure Web Access from Anywhere page
- Far fewer resources that need individual passwords
With fewer passwords and login routes off-campus, using e-resources will be much easier.
Stage 1: Athens is changing
From Monday 20th August you should use the Institutional Login option INSTEAD of the Athens login.
There are three options you may see when using Institutional Login:
- UK Federation login
- Institutional login
- Shibboleth
Click on any one of these, then select University of Surrey (or UK Federation followed by University of Surrey). You will then be directed to the University of Surrey login page:
Use your University account username and password as usual.
The old Athens route will remain active until 1st January 2013.

Sorry to hear you’ve been unable to use Athens. Athens access uses your normal University username and password, so you should have been able to login with these.
If you have any trouble accessing the new Institutional login after Monday (or need access to anything this week), do let us know and we will get this sorted out for you.
The old Athens route never worked anyway, unless there was a different user/pass we were meant to use to log in. If so, it’d be helpful if the university gave it out to all students when we joined! Never even heard of Athens until last year!
