Green Screenings: Inspiring Change Through Film

At the Surrey Sustainability Society, we believe that storytelling has the power to ignite change. That’s why, as part of Sustainability Week (31st March – 7th April 2025), we’re thrilled to present Green Screenings, a documentary showcase hosted at the Library Training Rooms on Level 1. This event is more than just a movie screening —it’s an opportunity to reflect, learn, and take action toward a more sustainable future.

Why Documentaries?

Film has a unique ability to connect us with global issues on a deeply personal level. Through powerful visuals and compelling narratives, documentaries can inspire empathy, spark conversations, and motivate action. This year, we’ve curated two thought-provoking films that explore the urgency of the climate crisis and the innovative solutions emerging worldwide:

  1. Do the Math (1st April, 12:00 – 14:00)
This gripping documentary follows the growing climate movement and its fight to divest from fossil fuels. It’s a call to action, reminding us that the power to create change lies in our hands.
  2. Normal Is Over (3rd April, 16:30 – 18:30) This film takes a deep dive into the environmental, economic, and social challenges we face, while highlighting the creative solutions that are reshaping our world. It’s a reminder that “normal” is changing—and we have the power to shape what comes next.

More Than Just a Screening

We’re not just here to watch—we’re here to act. After each screening, we’ll host a Green Pledge Session, where students can reflect on the films and write down their takeaways as pledges for a greener future. Whether it’s reducing waste, supporting renewable energy, or advocating for change, every pledge is a step toward a more sustainable world.

Sweetening the Deal

To make the experience even more enjoyable, we’ll be serving refreshments, including popcorn. It’s our way of saying thank you for joining us in this important conversation.

Why Are We Doing This?

Sustainability isn’t just about understanding the challenges—it’s about taking action. By hosting these screenings, we hope to:

  • Educate: Provide a deeper understanding of the climate crisis and its solutions.
  • Inspire: Motivate students to think critically about their role in creating change.
  • Connect: Foster a sense of community and shared responsibility.

Join Us

This event is for everyone—whether you’re a seasoned sustainability advocate or just starting to explore these ideas. Together, we can turn awareness into action and inspire a greener tomorrow.

So, grab a friend, enjoy some treats, and join us for the film screening, reflection, and action. Let’s make sustainability a natural part of student life—one documentary at a time.
