About us

Welcome to Made2Measure, a curated blog about Advanced Materials. The aim of the blog is to highlight research in ‘made to measure’ materials, which on the one hand means designing and making materials for bespoke applications and on the other how one goes about measuring the properties of some of these exotic new materials. There will be a new post on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of every month. Why curated? Well, whilst there is so much to say about materials, and we both enjoy telling people about them, it seems like a much better idea to ask the people who are actually doing the work to comment on what they’ve been doing. In curating this blog, we will be sourcing articles from the full breadth of Materials Science and Engineering, mostly with direct industrial applications. Over time we will also be adding some functionality to the site, with links to relevant organisations and other resources. We hope you enjoy reading the articles here, and if there is a material or an application that you’d like to read more about or which we haven’t yet profiled, do drop us a line at m2msurrey@gmail.com or on Twitter @made2_measure. About the Curators: David Jesson is a Research Fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering Sciences at the University of Surrey and is the Manager of the Mechanical Testing Facility. Whilst principally associated with the “Composites Cluster”, David enjoys working with most materials, ranging from cast iron to nanomaterials. Given that he does a lot of mechanical testing, it is perhaps no surprise that he tweets under the alias @breakerofthings, focussing primarily on materials. Mark Whiting is a Senior Lecturer in the same department, and is the Director of the MicroStructural Studies Unit. A metallugist at heart, Mark enjoys the complex and beautiful microstructures found in alloys and, for that matter, in most materials. Mark also Tweets on a variety of subjects as @DrMarkJWhiting
