Hi, my name is Jenitha and I am a chemical engineering student who has just completed my placement year at Southern Water.
Southern Water is a water supply and wastewater treatment company. It serves customers in the southern regions of England, including parts of Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, and the Isle of Wight. At my time at Southern water, I was working within the engineering & construction department as a Hydraulic Model Library Co-ordinator.
Prior Expectations
Going into this, I had my doubts about how I’d fit in the company especially considering my age and inexperience to the industry. Might I add, a male-dominated one at that too.
As part of my placement, I had decided to also move across the country down to Brighton. Therefore, I was also hesitant with how I would settle in and how long it will take for it be my new ‘norm’. Going into this, I was unsure what exactly my expectations were, but I was determined to make it work.
Life on Placement
It didn’t take long for me to settle in. Having been a placement student who seemed clueless at first, one piece of advice I give to anyone who is intrigued is to always ask questions regardless of how stupid they may be!
Reflecting on my year, I can proudly say that I have acquired a lot of new skills including working with different software as well as strengthening my existing skills.
The worries I had prior to the placement were no longer in my mind within the first week of the placement due to the hospitality of my new team. On placement, there are infinite opportunities to learn and develop, let it be professionally or personally.
Expanding my Network
Placement had also helped me build connections with many different individuals that work in different departments. My job role was vastly involved with contractors and suppliers therefore I was also able to learn about other companies along my journey with Southern Water.
My placement experience overall has been invaluable in terms of growth. I would 100% recommend undertaking one as you get an insight into the real working world.
