News: Prof Martyn Barrett “Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture”

Dear all,

I just wanted to let you know about a really positive impact that our very own Prof Martyn Barrett has had in influencing the education of children in Europe. He has written as the main author the Council of Europe’s “Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture” that was recently accepted unanimously at a Council of European conference by 50 education ministers across Europe (including the UK).

These ministers :

  • Undertook to launch the next phase of the implementation of the Framework through support for its testing at national, regional and European level
  • Undertook to increase the effectiveness of education for democratic citizenship by supporting member states in referring to and drawing upon the Framework, in particular when reviewing school curricula
  • Undertook to support the work of the Council of Europe in developing digital citizenship education in line with the Framework
  • Called on the Council of Europe to assist member states in examining and implementing the Framework in their national education systems through curriculum development, teaching and learning strategies and adequate assessment tools

Now I think we can safely say that this is Surrey Psychology having a clear, significant and positive impact. A big thank you and well done to Martyn for his fantastic work that hopefully will significantly change the democratic culture of Europe for generations to come. I think we might call this a fine example of Lifecourse Psychology!

I hope you all have a good bank holiday weekend.

All the best,

Derek
