Places to Go on Campus and in Guildford

Guildford is such a great town to live in, it’s got a little bit of everything. Whether you’re into history, outdoor spaces, or fun things to do, you’ll definitely find something to enjoy here. Plus, it’s only a 30-minute train to London Waterloo, so if you fancy a day in the city or heading to a big event, it’s super easy. That said, there’s also loads to do closer to home, both on campus and around Guildford.

This blog is all about my favourite places to go and things to do on campus and in Guildford. There’s way more out there, but here are my top picks!

On Campus

The University of Surrey campus is always buzzing with things to do. Whether you’re studying, socialising, or just looking for something to keep you busy, there’s plenty happening.

There’s always something happening on campus. Some of the best are:

Farm Days: Yes, you read that right- sometimes a farm brings animals to our PATS field, and it’s as amazing as it sounds.

Festive Workshops: Things like pumpkin carving at Halloween or wreath-making at Christmas. Such a fun way to take a break from studying.

Summer by the Lake: Summer here is next-level. There’s a big screen for movie nights, BBQs you can book, and just a great vibe by the water.

Rubix Events: Rubix might be known as the uni club, but it’s also where they host Bingo Lingo and show big sports games on the big screen.

Manor Park Social, Wates House and Hillside: I’m not focusing on food and drink here, but if you’re on campus, places like Manor Park Social, Wates House, and Hillside are definitely worth a visit. Wates House even has a pool table and karaoke nights!

GSA Performances: Go and watch a show that other students put on! I’ve seen a few and have loved every one.

Surrey Sports Park: Even if you’re not a gym person, the Sports Park is worth checking out. Membership gives you access to things like badminton, squash, and tennis courts. If that’s not your vibe, the café is open to everyone, and the outdoor seating overlooking the pitches is perfect on a sunny day.

Dog Therapy Sessions: These pop up during exam season. You can even choose what dog you want to spend your time with (I always pick ones that look like my dogs at home!).

Study-Friendly Places that you can also go for a chat:

The Library: The obvious go-to for studying. There are quiet zones for when you need to focus and busier areas for group work. Floor 4 is more of a social study area, it’s where everyone goes between lectures to “study” but mostly just chat while their laptop stays open!

The Hive: A great spot for a relaxed vibe. It even has a little kitchen with a microwave, kettle, and cutlery if you’ve brought food to heat up. You can also get any kind of uni advice here if you need it.

The Nest & The Spark: These spaces are super comfy, with sofas and a cosy atmosphere. Perfect for group discussions or just curling up with your notes.

In Guildford

The town itself is full of great places to explore, so here are some of my favourites:

Sixes: Virtual cricket might sound random, but it’s so much fun with a group of mates. Give it a go, you don’t even have to be good at cricket to enjoy it.

Merrist Wood Golf Club: This is a cheap golf course in Guildford, you can hire clubs there. It’s just a great place to get some practice in and have a nice day out with friends!

Unplug + Play: This is a hidden gem in Guildford. It’s a board game café with pretty much every game you can think of, and you can bring your own drinks too. Perfect for a chill evening.

Guildford Pottery: If you’re feeling creative, try Guildford Pottery. Making your own pottery is weirdly satisfying, even if it doesn’t turn out perfect. Check them out here.

Odeon Cinema: Sometimes you just need to watch a movie on the big screen with a massive bucket of popcorn. The Odeon in town is perfect for that.

Saturday Markets: The markets in Guildford are so good. They’ve got everything from vintage clothes to handmade jewellery and locally made jam. I usually get birthday presents here, it’s perfect for unique finds.

Guildford Cathedral: The cathedral itself is stunning, but they also host some really cool events, like vintage and Etsy markets. As someone who loves a good charity shop or boot sale, these are always a highlight for me.

G Live & The Boiler Room: Both are great for live music. Recently, we’ve had Scouting for Girls, and Lucy Spraggan is coming soon. Definitely check their event listings to see who’s playing.

Guildford Lido & Stoke Park: The lido is perfect in the summer. It’s an outdoor pool where you can cool off and relax. Stoke Park is right next to it and is great for a wander, a picnic, or just hanging out with friends.

Final Thoughts…

This is just a small taste of what campus and Guildford have to offer. There’s always something new to try, so get out there and explore. Have a favourite place or activity I’ve missed? Let me know, I’m always looking for new ideas!
