Topluluğun bir parçası olmaktan edindiğim tecrübeler / My experiences from being part of a society

Herkese merhaba!

Üniversite hayatı sadece ders calışmak ve yüksek not almak değildir. Yeni şeyler denemekten korkmayın!

Sorunuz varsa bize e-mail atmayı unutmayın!

Herkese güzel bir hafta sonu diliyorum!

Hi everyone!

Today, I will be writing about the society which I am part of, and how societies can have a great impact on both your social life and university life. As I have mentioned before, I am the events organiser of the Turkish and Northern Cypriot society this year and I will be sharing some of my experiences with you.

My first experience with societies was going to the freshers fair at the start of the year. I remember being overwhelmed by the amount of excitement and societies available. Surrey offers a wide range of societies for students to feel a sense of belonging. My parents encouraged me to sign up to societies and so I was excited to do so. I signed up for societies like photography, Turkish and the culture magazine. Unfortunately, like most students I did not end up participating in any of them. Although I did go to some events, I was a not an active member.

In my second year I started becoming a more active member in the Turkish society and tried to help the committee as much as I could.

Over the summer holidays, I realised the time I had wasted and realised the benefits of being a part of a society. I didn’t want to be a member only, but wanted to be in a committee.

This year, I requested to be a part of the Turkish society and was accepted. As there are a lot of Turkish Cypriots present, we aimed and have succeeded to change the name and events of our society. Students not only feel more sense of belonging, but enjoy the diversity our society represents. Doing collaborative events with other societies also allows you to meet people and see that society’s culture which widens your perspective on life.

I think the main benefit of a society is the people you meet. I am lucky to have the committee and the members of the society as close friends. We have also saved money to go on a group holiday together. It was an amazing experience. Being in a society also helps you get prepared for the workplace as it teaches you to be a team player as well as leadership roles.

One of the main negative points I have overcome in a society is the amount of work, effort and time you have to put in. It is difficult to juggle around society, studying, having a part time job and a social life all at the same time but like I have stated, it allows you to be prepared for the future. When you look at it from this point of view, it is actually a benefit.

I hope I have been able to motivate you to join societies as university life is not only about studying and getting high grades. Don’t be afraid to try something new!

I wish you all a lovely weekend!
