THE QUEEN!

Hey!

Today the Queen came to the University of Surrey. That fact alone should be enough to say that we are an amazing school. The Queen of England! The new vet school has been built and the official opening was today. She arrived in a beautiful Range Rover and was accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, her husband.

I got up early this morning, so that I would be right at the front of the barrier. I wanted the best view. It was chilly, but we managed to keep ourselves warm enough through our anticipation. We were given flags and I was ready to show some British pride. There was lots of flag waving and cheering. It was so cool to actually see the Queen with my own eyes! She was rather quick, but I did catch a smile from her. Now if you know the stereotypes about the Queen, it is known she does not smile often. Meaning, her smile was a rare and exciting sight 😉

In other news, the second week of school is coming to an end. I have had dance auditions all week, so haven’t been home until 10pm most nights. I am doing my best to balance dance, school, work, friends, basic necessities, finding a placement, and actually doing my homework…It will all get done eventually. Next week should be better; it is just one of those periods that is non-stop work.

Speaking of finding a placement, the Careers and Placement fair was yesterday. The school hosts this event, so companies from all industries can seek out placement students and graduates. I was interested in the computing ones, so I went to: Microsoft, Amazon, IBM, Accenture, among others. It was really helpful to speak directly to the companies and hearing about their programs. I got a greater idea about the competition that I would be facing in this upcoming year though. Many companies only have 2-3 slots available for placement students. I will be competing, not just against my classmates, but all of England for a spot. When you do get to the placement application period, sooner is much better rather than later. Many of these places have few spots and rolling applications, meaning there is no deadline to submit the application, but when the spots are filled that’s it. I was looking at the Microsoft internship and the deadline is this Sunday! It is the second week back. This just shows that I need to be on top of the deadlines when they are so soon.

For those who may be coming to the Computing Open Day this Saturday, come find me 🙂 I will be working there helping the potential applicants.

Ta Ta for now!
