Hello!
It’s official! Finals are over 🙂 By finishing half my 2nd year I am technically half way to finishing my degree already. As bachelor’s degrees here are done in only 3 years, I only have a year and a half of formal education left. The extra year to make my degree take four years to complete is my placement year.
At Surrey there is no formal grade given for the placement year. It is monitored by the school and you will have to produce a report on what you learnt, but it does not contribute to your degree marks. This means that it is just a great opportunity to learn, work on real projects, and make money with your newly developed skills. If you just want to get your degree and not do a placement that is also an option! The placement year is highly recommended however and is a perfect way to set yourself apart from others. This differentiation would be even more highly pronounced if you went back to America after your degree, as few if that, would have any work experience in a real professional work environment and thereby significantly increasing your chances of employment.
With finals over, I am entering the coveted Reading week. A week off school dedicated to preparing for next semesters classes, but most importantly having fun 😉 Rubix hosted a big night out for the end of finals with SIGMA as a guest performer! It was a great night out with almost everyone there. Rubix has a nice mix of places to dance, get a drink, sit and chat, or go outside to chat or smoke if that’s what you do. Sometimes Rubix will have food stalls outside so you can get a sandwich while still in Rubix.
I recently found out that the Guildford Legion club has Burrito Loco, a Mexican store like Qdoba or Chipotle, inside! My mind was blown.
For the rest of Reading week, I plan on going to Wales and Bath like I mentioned earlier and doing a lot of dancing in preparation for our first competition in Southampton. Coming up is also a Varsity competition where Kingston University come to the Sports Park and compete against Surrey in all the varsity sports. The sports include: American football, soccer (football), dance, lacrosse, badminton, and pretty much everything else! Surrey has won 6 years in a row 🙂

I must get back to my Xbox now 😉
