Lessons I’m Taking With Me From the University of Surrey”

Wow, I can’t believe it’s almost graduation time. Feels like I just blinked and suddenly, my whole Surrey journey zipped by. I remember rolling my suitcase into halls, feeling both hyped and kinda terrified, and now look at me—somehow made it to the end of my Media and Communications degree. Seriously, it’s been a long ride. And honestly? I learned way more than just what was in the module slides.

Managing my time was a whole learning curve. Uni life is hectic—lectures, assignments, part time shifts, trying to have a social life (and sometimes just a nap). Thank goodness for Google Calendar, right? And I finally figured out that it’s actually okay to take breaks and chill; you don’t have to be running on 100% all the time.

Finding my voice was another biggie. In first year, I was super quiet in seminars, second-guessing everything I wanted to say. But, group projects and uni events kind of forced me out of my shell. Turns out, what I had to say actually mattered, and now I’m not scared to speak and add my two cents in conversations?

The people, though—they made everything. Friends, foreign flatmates, random folks you only see once in the library at midnight—everyone played a part. Late-night kitchen chats, those frantic group study sessions, or even just a quick “hey!” on campus. That’s what made Surrey feel like home.

Jumping into stuff outside class—student ambassador gigs, media projects, faith groups—taught me that some of the best lessons happen when you step out of your comfort zone. Sometimes you mess up, but honestly, that’s half the fun and most of the growth.

And you know what? Not having everything figured out for life after uni—that’s totally fine. Pretty sure nobody does. The best thing is just to stay open, curious and be open to whatever comes up next. EXPLORE!

So, thanks Surrey, for all the memories, lessons, and laughs. I’m leaving with way more than just a degree—I’m leaving with nothing but good times, stories my kids will hear, and a lot more confidence.

Let’s see what’s next!
