Working with STARS students at University of Surrey

In May, Archives & Special Collections, working with learning development staff from the SPLASH team, piloted a new workshop drawing upon archives with STARS students.  These are 2nd and final year students who have been identified as high-achieving and a range of developmental support and workshops are offered to them to further enhance their learning experience and range of skills.

The collaborative workshop introduced the students to archives and their value for learning and research, and had them working with primary source materials from three collections at Surrey.  They worked in teams, initially exploring the archive items and then drawing on secondary source materials to build a promotional proposal and presentation.  The session offered the students insight into different sources available for their research, provided new research skills as well as experience of working in a team, evaluating sources and presentation skills.
