My Placement Year at the University of Modena & Reggio Emilia, Italy

During my placement year, I spent 8 transformative months at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE) in Modena, Italy. The overall experience not only deepened my academic knowledge, but also provided invaluable personal growth and unforgettable memories.

Work Experience & Academic Growth

At UNIMORE, my primary focus was gaining lab experience in a professional setting. Here I worked on a research project titled “Kinase Inhibitors for the Treatment of Cancer”, focusing on organic chemistry. This hands-on experience allowed me to apply my academic knowledge with real-world applications and refine my laboratory skills.

Additionally, I collaborated with fellow students who soon became friends and not just peers. There was a fun, dynamic atmosphere in the lab where we shared ideas and learned from each other.

Life Outside the Lab

Living in Modena was an exciting cultural adventure. Italy’s rich history, vibrant lifestyle, and beautiful landscapes quickly became a part of my daily life. Modena itself, with its famous balsamic vinegar, pasta, and regional specialties, offered a unique window into Italian food and customs.

Learning to navigate the city, practice the language, and adapt to the Italian way of life expanded my cultural awareness and deepened my appreciation for other cultures.

Through the Erasmus Student Network, I made friends from all over the world, not just Italy. The friendships I made through Erasmus and the lab are some of the most memorable highlights of my year.

Naturally, whilst being abroad I took the opportunity to do a lot of travelling. With friends and alone, I explored Italy’s most iconic cities as well as the smaller, less known ones. The food, the culture, and the people were incredible.

Would I Do It Again? Absolutely.

If you’re considering a year abroad, do it. Combining work experience with international exposure is the perfect way to grow both academically and personally. It’s an experience you won’t regret. If I could do it again, I’d extend my stay!

Conclusion

My placement year in Modena was life-changing. It boosted my confidence, gave me new skills, and expanded my horizons in ways I didn’t expect. If you’re thinking about studying abroad, just go for it—you’ll never look back.

The Study and Work Abroad Fair is on Wednesday 27 November 10am-3pm in Rubix.
