Pewley Down is a small hill, and also a street so named, located in Guildford of England. It’s a place of truly outstanding natural beauty as the wiki and map states. Gorgeous open park with generally rolling hills, small paths through woods and plentiful picnic areas are combined to make this park become the best place to connect the bustling town and countryside. When sitting down here, you wouldn’t believe that you were a mile from the hustle and bustle town centre of Guildford with its incredible views and tranquil scenery. From here, you can enjoy lovely views across Guildford.
On the other side of the hill, there’s another small valley with lots of views. You can only get into there via cycling or walking as the result of no parking spaces. During the spring and summer there are lots of wildflowers spring into life which make you feel so good. Quite quiet away from everything in the town, it’s also nice to bump into some other visitors here, most of them are very nice mannered. It’s worth going to if you really like nature and walking.
It links to the open space at Pewley Down and was used as the site of a semaphore station and a defensive fort in the nineteenth century. In the late 19th and early 20th century, much of the properties and public facilities were built upon this piece of land.
In history, Pewley Down was part of lands granted by William the Conqueror to the Testard family. It takes its name from the De-La-Puille family who gained it from Richard Testard in 1255. The Puille family name was also reflected in the manor of Poyle and the Poyle Charity.
There’s an Admiralty semaphore station built at Pewley Hill in 1822, which forming part of the London-Portsmouth semaphore line. The building remains, with a cupola on top which was added after the semaphore went out of use. In 1866 Guildford Corporation built a new reservoir at the top of Pewley Hill. Pewley Hill Fort was built in around 1890 as part of the London Defence Positions scheme, running from Guildford along the North Downs to Fort Halstead, up the Darent Valley to Dartford, and north of the Thames to North Weald. The scheme was abandoned in 1906.
