今年由于疫情原因，学校自从4月份至8月都处于封锁关闭状态，除了一些必要的运营性工作人员仍在坚守岗位，其他人员均采用居家办公的方式。但在这段时间，学校的许多工作人员并没有闲下来，为了给来到萨里学习的同学们更好更多元化的学习与社交环境，原先位于Stag Hill校区中心Hive对面的一处学校工作人员办公场所改造成为了The Nest, 面积和对面的Hive差不多大。和Hive作为学校一站式的学生服务平台、兼容一些个人与小组学习与社交空间不同，The Nest无论从结构设计、装修风格、布局规划方面和Hive几乎迥然不同，更突出强调轻松愉快的社交与学习风格。我住在离这里不远的Surrey Court宿舍区，可以说从整个5月份到7月份都能听见白天The Nest里装修的声音，看到施工建筑人员来回进出忙碌，可当8月初The Nest对外开放时，第一次进去参观时我还是被这里明快亮丽、轻松愉快的的风格以及处处体现的人性化设计所惊讶。下面就让我带大家一起来看看我们新的“学生之家”-Nest吧！
Due to the epidemic this year, the school has been in a closed state from April to August. Except for some necessary operational staff who are still holding their positions, other staff are working from home. However, during this time, many of the school staff did not take time off. In order to give students who came to Surrey soon a better and more diversified learning and social environment. The Nest was created and located in the opposite direction of the Hive. Hive is known as the center of the Stag Hill campus. As the university’s one-stop student service platform, Hive is compatible with some individual and group learning and social spaces. The Nest is almost completely different from Hive in terms of structural design, decoration style, layout planning, and emphasizes relaxing and pleasant social interaction and individual or group learning. I’m living in the Surrey Court accommodation area which is not far from here. It can be said that from May to July, I can very often hear the sound of decoration in The Nest during the day. I saw construction workers were very busily coming in and going out. The Nest was opened to the public in early August When I visited for the first time, I was really surprised by the bright and relaxing style and the humanized design everywhere. Now let me take everyone to look at our new “student home”-Nest!
在Hive的斜对面，在通往Hillside餐厅的方向上，很容就可以看到一楼The Nest的标志，标志设计很形象生动，让人印象深刻。进入后，你一定会发现这里其实并不算太大，但紧凑的设计、空间和的合理利用与巧妙布局，不同颜色的搭配和空间分割让有限的空间显得非常富有层次感。
Diagonally across from Hive, in the direction leading to the Hillside restaurant, you can easily see the logo of The Nest on the first floor. The logo design is vivid and impressive. After entering, you will definitely find that this place is not too big, but the overall compact design, reasonable use of space and layout, the matching of different colors and the division of space make the limited space appear very layered.
整体来说，Hive分为三大功能区，学习区、小组活动区与社交活动区。进入Hive首先就会看到中间大部宽敞舒适的学习区，它由三部分构成：
Overall, Hive is divided into three functional areas, learning area, group study area and social activity area. When entering Hive, you will first see a large and comfortable study area in the middle, which is composed of three parts:
(1).沙发区：这里的地板由假草坪铺设，有很多舒适的沙发与坐垫，你可以在这里或坐下或躺卧，非常的人性化。可以想象一下，如果你结束了连续四五个小时高强度的课程，需要给自己紧绷的神经和肌肉放松下，这里绝对会是一个良好的去处放松一下，你可以在这里与朋友交谈、或戴上耳机闭目养神、或浏览自己喜欢的刊物书籍。尤其是对于住在Manor Park或者是非常远的Hazel Farm宿舍区的同学们来说，如果有午休的习惯可是下午又有课程，就可以来Nest来稍许放松休息一下。
（1）.Sofa area: The floor here is paved with fake lawns, and there are many comfortable sofas and cushions. You can sit or lie down here, which is very user-friendly. Imagine that if you have finished four or five hours of continuous high-intensity classes and need to relax your tight nerves and muscles, this will definitely be a good place to relax. You can talk with friends, or put on your headphones and close your eyes to have a rest, or browse your favorite websites or books. Especially for students who live in Manor Park or the Hazel Farm accommodation area which are very far away, if you have the habit of lunch break but have classes in the afternoon, you can come to Nest to relax and rest.
(2). 圆桌学习区：在沙发区后面就是圆桌学习区，这里也是一个开放式空间，有一侧全部为靠窗沙发构成，墙边有提供充电插座，同学们可以在此学习或进行小组学习讨论。
- . Round table study area: Behind the sofa is the round table study area. This is also an open space. One side of it is composed of sofas by the window, and there are charging sockets by the wall. Students can study here or carry out group discussion.
(3).长桌学习区：在最里面就是长桌学习区了，这里位子之间的间隔比较小，灯光亮度不错，很像图书馆里的布局。这里距离其他地方较远，可能是为了隔开噪音的考虑。
(3). Long table study area: The long table study area is the innermost area. The space between seats is relatively small, and the lighting brightness is good, much like the layout of the library. It is far away from other places, which may be designed to isolate noise.
在Nest的两侧角落里各有一个封闭式的学习室，隔音效果很好，可供学生们进行小组学习与活动。其中一个小房间由玻璃罩隔开，里面配备有多媒体设备可进行远程视频对话与幻灯片放映。许多需要做Presentation和Group Project的学校小组会需要这样的地方学习沟通，当然这个房间需要提前在学校官网上或今年刚推出的Surrey App上提前查询空位并预定。
There is a closed study room on both sides of the Nest, which has good sound insulation and can be used for group study and activities. One of the small rooms is separated from the outside by a glass cover, which is equipped with multimedia equipment for remote video conversation and slide show. Many school groups that need to do Presentation and Group Project will need such a place to learn and communicate. Of course, this room availability needs to be checked and booked in advance on the school’s official website or the Surrey App which just launched in early this year.
接下来就是我认为Nest最与众不同的地方了，它有一个堪称豪华的专属社交活动空间，这里呈三角形结构，配备有许多考究的家具设施与多媒体设备，装修精美。我第一次来时，甚至有一种感觉到这里有些类似于酒店行政酒廊的时空错位感。学校里的许多学生兴趣社团活动和一些访谈、宣传视频录制，这里都会是理想的场所。
Next is what I think is the most distinctive place of Nest. It has a luxurious and exclusive social event space. It has a triangular structure and is equipped with many exquisite furniture and multimedia equipment. It is beautifully decorated. When I first came, I even felt a sense of time-space dislocation similar to the hotel executive lounge. So I think this place will be ideal for many student club activities, interviews, and promotional video recordings in the school.
除了这几个区域外，The Nest还有许多其他充满创意的人性化设计，比如在三角形社交活动区后面的墙体上被打洞制作成了可供休息的小阁；过道里也有大吊篮构成的沙发；另一侧出口处有让学生存放私人物品的免费临时储存柜等等。同时，为了迎接新生，所有的地面都贴了指示路标；为了应对可能到来的第二波新冠疫情，很多地方都贴了两米社交间距与快速通过等提醒。说明，学校已经做好了迎接下学期挑战的准备，期待为师生提供更好的教学与学习环境。
In addition to these areas, The Nest has many other creative and user-friendly designs. For example, the wall behind the triangular social activity area was punched into four small ‘cabinets’ for students to have rest; there are also large hanging baskets formed sofa in the aisle; at the exit on the other side, there are many free-using temporary storage cabinets for students to store personal belongings, etc. At the same time, in order to welcome the new students, all the grounds are posted with road signs; in order to deal with the possible second wave of the Covid-19 epidemic, many places have posted reminders such as two-meter social distance and fast-passing. It shows that the school is ready to meet the challenges of the next semester and looks forward to providing a better teaching and learning environment for us.
