This is an STFC Impact Acceleration Account Project, designed to explore commercialisation of ideas generated through STFC-funded research. The industrial partner, Siemens CD-adapco (Computational Dynamics-Analysis & Design Application Company Ltd), is a world leader in the development and delivery of computational fluid dynamics software.
Placement title
Modern Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Methods: an exciting new approach to geometry-free CFD problems
Placement description
We will take a computational fluid dynamics technique developed by astrophysicists (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics; SPH) and study whether it can find use in commercial engineering applications like modelling fluid flow around cars, or gas-fluid mixtures flowing along pipes. The techniques we will explore are already developed and presented in the astrophysics literature but are not well known outside astrophysics. A range of new methods have sprung up over the past 5-10 years, but no systematic study has been carried out to assess which gives the best performance. We will provide this study, informing our commercial partner – Siemens – as to which SPH technique is best-suited to their code-base and problem set.
Person specification
PhD student or postdoc with experience with software programming for high performance computing is essential. Experience with fluid dynamics codes, particularly smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), is desirable.
