IELTS Exemption Course 2022

Background

This year we are able to open up the IELTS Exemption Course (IEC) free of charge to all early years PhD students who may benefit from attending. Previously, this course was only for PhD students who have entered their programme through the IELTS Exemption route. This means they have met the overall IELTS requirements for the programme, e.g. 6.5 or above overall, but they have at most two skills at 5.5. The course is delivered by the English for Academic Purposes team which is part of the School of Literature and Languages.

The aim of the course is to help students further develop their English academic language and skills through the four areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Topics covered include the writing process, academic language, critical reading and note-taking, delivering spoken presentations, academic referencing, writing a research proposal and working with your supervisor. At the end of the course, students need to submit a critical review of an article from their specialist field and deliver an oral presentation based on a couple of specific areas from their PhD.
