A Short Day Trip to Reading: Food, Fun & Relaxation 🌇🍴

If you’re looking for a quick yet refreshing day trip, Reading makes for the perfect getaway! With its blend of cultural spots, cozy dining options, and relaxing strolls, you can easily enjoy a memorable day exploring this vibrant town. Here’s how my recent day trip to Reading went — packed with good food, great weather, and some lovely sights!

Getting There 🚆

I hopped on a train from Guildford Station to Reading, and with a railcard, an open return ticket was only £8.47 — super affordable for a fun day out! The journey was smooth and stress-free, making Reading an ideal spot for a spontaneous trip with friends!

Lunch at Osaka Restaurant 🍣🍱

My first foodie stop was Osaka Restaurant, a delightful Japanese eatery that impressed me with its authentic flavors. I ordered the Seafood stew and Spicy Tonkotsu ramen. The broth was rich in flavor, and I thoroughly enjoyed every spoonful.

📍 Forbury Gardens & Reading Abbey Ruins

After fueling our stomachs with delicious food, we went to Forbury Gardens, a peaceful Victorian park that’s ideal for an afternoon stroll. The nearby Reading Abbey Ruins offered a glimpse into the town’s rich history — a fantastic spot for history buffs or anyone who enjoys sightseeing.

📍 The Reading Museum 🖼️🏛️

Next up was a visit to the Reading Museum, located inside the beautiful Victorian Town Hall. This hidden gem offers a fantastic look into Reading’s rich history and culture — and best of all, entry is free!

🖌️ Highlights:

  • The Bayeux Tapestry Replica — an impressive full-size replica of the famous tapestry, retelling the story of the Norman Conquest.
  • Reading’s Industrial Past — showcasing the town’s significance in the biscuit, brewing, and seed industries.
  • Art & Artefacts — a collection of paintings, medieval sculptures, and archaeological finds that offer a glimpse into Reading’s vibrant past.

It’s a must-visit for history lovers or anyone wanting to add a cultural touch to their day out.

P.S. There are many hands-on activities that you can do there too!

Dinner: Piwnica Restaurant🍲

To end the day on a high note, I dined at Piwnica Restaurant, an authentic Polish gem tucked away in Reading. The cozy ambiance, traditional Polish dishes, and friendly staff made it a memorable experience.

Must-Try: Their pierogi (dumplings) were soft and flavorful. Their pork belly and crispy chicken were both incredibly tasty, and their beer had a delightful honey aftertaste — smooth and refreshing!
