Dr Holland said: “In this instance, that is particularly difficult, as the multitude of causes driving the protest movement arguably only reflects the diversity of opinion about what is wrong with the global economy and how best to fix it.
Media commentary on the protests around the world has so far been characterised by intrigue, confusion, and mockery: intrigue at the global contagion of protest; confusion about the message being promoted; and mockery of the diversity of causes apparently supported.
“Like all protests, this is a form of communication, the success of which will depend on crafting a resonant message. The difficulty will come in attempting to channel the shared sense of anger, expressed in the vocal criticism of global economic mismanagement, into viable and credible alternative solutions.”
