Hey everyone! Whether you’re new to Guildford or just looking for some fun activities to break up your study routine, this charming town has plenty to offer. From shopping and parks to entertainment and history, Guildford has something for everyone. Here are some of the things I would reccomend:
1. The Friary Shopping Centre and High Street
- The Friary Shopping Centre is a go-to destination for all your retail therapy needs. Located in the heart of Guildford, this mall boasts a variety of shops, from fashion brands like Zara and H&M to HMV and a foodcourt. However, do note that unlike that the foodcourt here is different compared to Singapore where it mainly consists of franchise stores like KFC and Subway. Additionally, unlike malls like Ion Orchard and VivoCity are bustling hubs of activity, The Friary feels more like a cozy, more laid-back version like Clementi Mall. It’s perfect for those days when you need a break from studying and want to indulge in some retail therapy or grab a quick bite.
- Next, Guildford’s High Street is a picturesque cobbled street lined with an array of shops, cafes, and historical buildings. It’s the perfect place to take a leisurely stroll, window shop, or grab a coffee. The mix of modern stores and charming, centuries-old architecture gives it a unique vibe.
2. Relax and Unwind at Stoke Park
- Need a breath of fresh air? Head over to Stoke Park, which I would say is one of Guildford’s most beautiful green space. Perfect for picnics, jogging, or just lounging in the sun, Stoke Park offers picturesque scenery and a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of university life. It reminds me a bit of Singapore’s Botanic Gardens, with its lush greenery and serene atmosphere. Whether you’re playing frisbee with friends or simply reading a book under a tree, it’s a great way to relax and recharge.
3. Catch a Movie at ODEON Cinema
- When you need a break from studying, why not catch the latest blockbuster at the ODEON Cinema? Located in the Guildford Town Centre, the ODEON offers comfortable seating, a wide selection of snacks, and the latest films on the big screen. It’s a perfect way to unwind with friends or enjoy a solo movie night. Plus, at the time of writing, ODEON Cinema has an offer where tickets are just £5 – a great deal, especially for us students!
4. Dive into History at Guildford Castle
- Step back in time with a visit to Guildford Castle. This historic site offers stunning views of Guildford and the surrounding countryside from its Great Tower. The beautifully maintained gardens are a great spot for a leisurely stroll, and the informative displays inside the castle will give you a glimpse into the town’s rich history.
5. Explore the River Wey
- For a serene and scenic experience, take a walk along the River Wey. This tranquil waterway offers picturesque walking paths and the opportunity to see Guildford from a different perspective. You can even catch some people kayaking at times too! It’s a refreshing change from the bustling Singapore River and offers a unique way to enjoy the natural beauty of Guildford.
6. Visit G Live
- G Live is Guildford’s premier entertainment venue, hosting a variety of events from concerts and comedy shows to theatre productions and community events. Keep an eye on their schedule for upcoming performances and grab tickets for a fun night out with friends. It’s like having a slice of the Esplanade right here in Guildford, offering a diverse range of performances to suit every taste.
7. Enjoy Ice Skating and More at Guildford Spectrum
- Guildford Spectrum is an all-in-one leisure complex offering a range of activities including ice skating, swimming, bowling, and even a gym. It’s a fantastic place filled with versatile activies to spend a fun-filled day with friends or to try out a new sport.
8. Experience the Guildford Market
- For a taste of local life, visit the Guildford Market held on Fridays and Saturdays. Here you can find fresh produce, unique crafts, and tasty street food. It’s a great way to support local vendors and discover hidden gems. It brings back memories of pasar malams back home, where you can browse through stalls and find interesting items and delicious snacks.
To sum up, Guildford offers a diverse array of activities to keep you entertained and engaged throughout your time at the University of Surrey. Whether you’re exploring the outdoors, delving into history, or simply enjoying a day out with friends, there’s always something to do in this vibrant town. Alternatively, there are always day trips out of Guildford which I will be talking about in the next blog 🙂
Happy exploring, everyone!
