One World Week at Surrey!

I celebrated One World Week recently at Surrey and I thought it would be fun to share my experience with all of you. One World Week at University of Surrey is a celebration of culture, and the diversity of our students. A plethora of events were organized by the Students’ Union which included a sushi making class, yoga class, community litter pack, Hari’s Challenge Pub Quiz Special with a theme of One World, One World Exhibition at Rubix and One World Gala at GLive. Out of these events I was lucky enough to attend the last two events and I thoroughly enjoyed both of them.

One World Exhibition was held at Rubix on 21st February 2023. This event showcased many cultural societies at University of Surrey, with displays of food, different cultures and sub-cultures and cultural wear. There was a giant globe of the Earth on Rubix stage that I thought was super cool. It was really fun to walk around and converse with the different societies and learn more about them, and of course try their food.

There was also an exhibition by AnimalsUK which gave the opportunity for students to interact safely and humanely with a bunch of unique animals. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of being around animals so I kept my safe distance from the stall, but it was fun to see the delight of animal-loving students at the exhibition.

One World Gala was held at G Live on 24th February 2023. Introduction to the event was given by VP Community Jo Yau and welcoming remarks by Vice-Chancellor Professor Max Lu. Performances were given by Surrey Japanese Society, Surrey Malayali Society, Surrey University Nepalese Society (SUNS), Korean International Students’ Society (KISS), USSU Jazz Orchestra, Surrey Tamil Society, Surrey ABACUS (Association of British and Chinese University Students).  I thoroughly enjoyed all the performances; it was really amazing to see the effort and passion of all the performers. I kept thinking about how most students live such busy lives, juggling studies, assignments, part-time work, and social lives, and I really appreciated the time and effort they must have put into giving such polished and smooth performances.
