Ramadan is coming up tomorrow. Now more than ever I long for home. I think of my parents and siblings sitting in the same room reciting the holy Quran. I think of going to the Mosque with my mom and sisters to pray taraweeh. I think of my friends and I packing picnics out to the beach to break our fasts. I think of game nights and carrom tournaments. In Ramadan we come together, to fast together, to eat together, to pray together.
Ramadan is such a special month for us as muslims. It teaches us to empathize with those who are less fortunate, it teaches us to be generous and to practice self-discipline. Most importantly, Ramadan offers countless opportunities for spiritual reflection, and to strengthen our islamic faith.
I’m not sure what’s in store for me observing Ramadan in the UK. There are a couple of events here I’m excited to take part in. Chelsea Football Club is hosting a first of its kind Iftar event at Stamford Bridge. I grew up an avid fan of CFC and actually have been planning on visiting the stadium for a while and I think this would be the perfect opportunity! I also saw some Ramadan-themed lights in Piccadilly Circus, which is not only London’s first ever celebratory Ramadan lights, but the first time a European city has had such a grand display for Ramadan, with it’s 30,000 lights. I am very much looking forward to seeing them next time I go up to London.
For all of us here in Guildford, iftar meals will be available at Hillside (pre-booking required). Surrey Islamic Society is currently raising funds to host free for all Iftar events, so if it’s within your means, please donate here. Taraweeh prayer will be taking place at University Hall.
The Library will also be putting snacks such as dates, cereal bars, crisps, and nuts out near their main reception each evening at sunset. So even if you’re camping out at the library trying to finish assignments, there will be means for you to break your fast. It is comforting to know that even while I feel so far away from home, support is available to me at the University through so many pathways. Do check out the guide to Ramadan published on mysurrey here, for more information.
I’ve got my room cleaned up, pantry and fridge stocked up with healthy nutritious food, prayer kit fresh and laundered. For all observing, I hope this blessed month gives you the opportunity to heal spiritually and connect deeper. Ramadan Mubarak y’all!
