Working part-time while studying

During your time at the University of Surrey, learning should be your top priority. However, if you’re interested in doing some part time work, there are plenty of options available to you. There are part-time in person jobs, hybrid working, as well as remote jobs available both locally, and even internationally that you might want to check out. In this short article, I want to shed some light on some options available to you.

First, it is important to understand the Visa type you have, and the maximum weekly hours you can legally work while studying. For example, my Visa gives me the option to work maximum of 20 hours per week. Next, you need to enroll yourself into the workforce by requesting for a National Insurance Number. Please visit this government website for more information regarding this procedure. You must also have a local bank account where your salary can be deposited. Polishing up an existing CV/resume or creating a new one is also helpful.

If you would prefer working for the University of Surrey, there are many options available, which can be found through Unitemps. Unitemps is your door to working for the University, and my international student ambassador status in which I am writing this article is also through Unitemps. The website offers available work, and there is also a Unitemps office at the University of Surrey willing to guide you with any queries that you might have.

If you want to work in other areas in Guildford, many retailers post part time work on the Indeed website where you can create a CV and apply easily. Two website where you can find jobs catered to students are Student Jobs and Save The Student. Some jobs can also be found through pop-up stalls at the University and throughout the Guildford area. Lastly, if you’re looking for remote jobs that you can do from the comfort of your home, there are many websites that can help you, one of which I have used in the past being Upwork where you can work in areas that you already specialize in.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, your studies are what matter the most during your time at the University of Surrey. Therefore, if part-time workloads are affecting your studies, it is important to take a step back from working or work less hours per week. Most importantly, you should never skip a class to go to work! Most employers offer flexible working hours for students that do not affect their class times. There are many students that do work part-time for that extra money, and it can be a fulfilling vocation providing you with valuable experience, if you can manage your time well.

Cheers,
