Bath has been a city on the forefront of my travel list, even way before I came to study to the UK. I had always been enchanted by the thought of its Roman baths and stunning Georgian architecture, and last week I finally got the chance to travel there.
I was staying in Bristol as part of an extended trip (read my Bristol article here) and took the 13-minute train from there to Bath. From the train stop, the first destination on the itinerary was the famed Roman Baths, the city’s most famous attraction. I was amazed at how well-preserved the site was, despite the fact it was built around 70 AD! Guided by the audio tour, I wandered around the site and imagined myself as part of the ancient Roman civilization. I learned about how the Roman Bath served multiple purposes, as place of healing, a place of exercise, a place for business, but most importantly a place of community. We also learned about the remains of the Roman Temple on-site which was dedicated to the goddess Sulis Minerva. As a water and engineering student, I was particularly in awe of the Romans’ advanced understanding of water management, heating systems, structural stability, and architectural design.
Next stop was Bath Abbey, located just next to the Roman Baths. The Gothic architecture of the Abbey was really stunning. My favourite part was the soaring vaulted ceilings, which made the Bath Abbey really distinct from other places of worship I’ve yet seen in the UK.
After a quick lunch, we went to check out The Circus, and The Royal Crescent, both historical and architectural landmarks in the city. As places where Netflix’s Bridgerton was shot, these two places had added interest for me. After a quick stroll around nearby Royal Victoria Park, we then made our way to Alexandra Park which had a fantastic viewpoint of the city. To finish off our day, we headed to Pulteney Bridge to catch the sunset over the River Avon and admire the magnificent Pulteney Weir.
I had a fantastic day out in Bath, and thoroughly enjoyed all the places I got to see. Unfortunately I did not have enough time to check out some independent bookshops in Bath that I had on my list, such as Topping & Company Booksellers of Bath with their amazing mobile ladders. Maybe that means I have to make another trip to Bath before my time in the UK ends 😉
Hope you enjoyed reading about my Bath adventures!
