I got a place at the University of Surrey via clearing after missing my place at another university by one grade. I remember the morning of results day being a bit of a whirlwind – calling and securing offers from five different universities!
Although I had been offered places on four, three-year bachelor’s courses, I opted to study a four-year bachelor’s course with foundation year here at Surrey. It was without a doubt one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

I had never visited or applied to the University, so it was quite a scary decision to make. Surrey stood out to me because of the incredible health sciences facilities, easily accessible placement localities and support network. I was able to view the Stag Hill and Manor Park campuses through the University’s website and this gave me a good idea of what to expect. I was still very anxious when I arrived but all the welcome staff and students I met were so kind, helpful and friendly. There is a community feel here that is unlike anywhere else and creates a lovely environment to make friends and settle.
The foundation year equipped me with all the skills I needed to be successful on my course too. It provided a great knowledge base, a newfound confidence and the ability to support others. I also made many of my closest friends during this year.
Why I love studying nursing
There are many reasons I love studying nursing at Surrey, but I think the main one is the health sciences family. Having strong friendships within the school really ensures you have a good support system. It’s lovely studying a course where everyone is connected by their passion for caring for others.
I really like the practical element of my course too. We spend a lot of time in the Clinical Simulation Centre to practise clinical and communication skills and understand what it’s like to work in a healthcare environment, which is really useful for placement.
How Surrey has supported me
I genuinely believe that the University of Surrey has some of the best support services for students.
All nursing courses can be incredibly challenging, and the Centre for Wellbeing has been there for me throughout my studies to support me with counselling which is easy to access and book.
The fantastic facilities at the University have also been a great source of support. The library is a great space to study either individually or with friends and has multiple floors dedicated to different types of study spaces. You can also book one-to-one sessions or attend drop-in sessions with the library’s academic skills team who can assist you with assignments.
We also have an amazing Students’ Union who really care about student experience and are always running fantastic activities that you can get involved with.
Looking to the future
Nursing is such a diverse career and there are so many different opportunities we can pursue after graduation.
Many of the health sciences placement localities offer jobs to third-year students who wish to continue working in the trust after they have completed their degree. For students who are moving elsewhere, personal tutors are always happy to give advice and assist where they can too.
Surrey has helped me develop ambition, a strong sense of self and an appreciated of what will be important to me as a newly qualified nurse. I’m ready to enter a challenging yet rewarding career!
