Open day at Surrey: Grace’s experience

During my final year of sixth form, I attended an open day at Surrey in order to help make the decision of which university would be most suitable for me for my further education. I can really say with confidence that this open day finalised my decision to study at the University of Surrey.

I met with the student ambassadors at the Kate Granger Building entrance and was provided with information about the structure of the day and encourage to book a tour of the Surrey Clinical Simulation Centre Facilities. I was guided to the Atrium where there were refreshments, and information fair with lecturers and current students to answer any questions I had. They provided me with authentic information about their experience on the course so far, which provided a positive perspective and excitement about enrolling onto the course. Information stands covered everything one would want to know before joining university from course stands to the admissions and funding team.

Shortly, there was an introduction to the day and the subject specific talks, accommodation talks and tours of the facilities and accommodation commenced. Exploring the Surrey Clinical Simulation Centre was the highlight of the day! It was amazing to see state of the art facilities which are representative of a real working environment with working clinical skills equipment. The students demonstrated what using the room would look like with the simulation actors and what each of their roles are when using the sim suite on lecture days. I couldn’t believe that this is somewhere that I could be studying in the future.

The subject specific talk was so informative. It was presented by the course lecturers and included information about the course flow, entry requirements, assessment methods and placement information – I was thrilled to hear about opportunities to go to different hospitals and areas where care can be provided including community nursing and prisons!

After the talks, student and visitors were welcomed to have a self-guided tour around the Manor Park and Stag Hill campus. This meant that they could explore all the facilities on campus including the library, The Nest, The Hive and the numerous food and drink spots which they are welcome to use on campus.

Overall, this day solidified that University of Surrey was the right place for me to live and study. It felt like home away from home and I have never looked back.
