Why I love studying my masters at Surrey

My name is Alex and I am currently doing my postgraduate taught degree in International Relations (International Intervention). My dream has always been to work in politics and many of the opportunities needed for a masters degree. The decision to continue my studies was one of the hardest, but I always knew where I would like to do it – here at Surrey. My undergraduate degree at the University of Surrey were full of many exciting experiences and amazing support so the decision to stay here came naturally – as natural as breathing.

One of the things that has stood out to me most about postgraduate life at Surrey is the way it combines academic depth with real-world opportunities. The university offers a wide range of roles, placements, and part-time positions designed specifically for postgraduates. For example, I have been able to continue working as an International Student Ambassador and Content Creator, which has helped me build valuable skills in communication and digital engagement.

In addition to enriching my education, these experiences have improved my readiness for professional positions in foreign policymaking bodies, ministries of foreign affairs, and international organisations. A postgraduate degree from Surrey significantly expands your knowledge in the field of your choice. The instruction is more focused and discussion-based, which improves your comprehension of the material and boosts your self-assurance. For me, that has meant exploring deeply into subjects like global governance and international intervention under the direction of professors who are sincerely enthusiastic about what they teach.

What also makes the postgraduate experience here unique is the vibrant sense of community. Even if you are new to Surrey, it is easy to find your place, whether that is through postgraduate-specific social events, academic societies, or campus clubs. I experimented with new societies this year, such as Art and Snowsports, where I got to know people from a wide range of fields and backgrounds.

These activities gave me a much-needed balance alongside my studies and reminded me that there is always space to try something new, no matter what stage of university you are in. I have also stayed involved in the Politics Society, which has been especially meaningful for me. It is inspiring to see student-led societies thrive when you are at postgraduate level, and it shows how much support there is for you to pursue your interests beyond the seminar room.

Ultimately, what I have enjoyed most about postgraduate life at Surrey is the combination of familiarity and challenge. You are surrounded by individuals who share your enthusiasm, ambition, and curiosity, but you are also continuously urged to develop, venture outside of your comfort zone, and become ready for life beyond university. Whether you have studied here before or are completely new to the campus, Surrey offers a welcoming and enriching environment to take that next step in your academic and professional journey.

This additional year also helped me try new societies that I had not before. I went to a couple of sessions with the Art society as well as a few social sessions with Snowsports – full of such amazing and inspiring individuals. It was also lovely to see my favourite society – the Politics society, grow and to be able to continue to contribute to it as a social secretary.

Overall, I think my year as a masters student was the best one as a student and I am incredibly grateful that I got to experience it with my ‘day ones’ in our favourite place – Surrey.
