Top tips for navigating Clearing

Why I chose Surrey

I entered Clearing after marginally missing out on my place at another university. Although I was offered four three-year bachelor’s courses through Clearing, I decided to choose Surrey which offered me a four-year degree with a foundation year to study nursing. I had never previously looked at or considered Surrey as it was quite far away from my home, and I was unfamiliar with Guildford. However, I opted for this course as the facilities, opportunities and support outweighed any of my worries.

Entering Clearing did feel like a very lonely experience. Many of my friends had secured places at their first-choice university and it felt like I was the only person in this position. I was also unsure what a foundation year would entail or look like. It is important to look after yourself during this time and remember that you will find the right path for you and that there are many people in the same boat even if it may not feel like it.

Having the foundation year really gave me a great university family and prepared me for the challenging world of nursing. I made so many friends during this year and support I got from the lecturing staff was truly incredible. Without this year I know that I would not be performing as well in both my practical and written course components. This was one of the best decisions I have made and has given me so many memories which I will treasure for years to come.

Although it was not my original plan, I genuinely and wholeheartedly believe that I belong at Surrey, and this is the place I was meant to study.

Top tips for navigating Clearing

  • Start calling universities as soon as you get your grades

It is important to call universities as soon as you have your grades because courses will fill quickly. Calling early will give you the best chance of securing a place.

  • Do not feel pressured into accepting your first offer

Selecting a university is an important decision and you should not feel rushed or pressured to take the first offer that you receive. Most universities will let you hold an offer with them for a few days before it expires so continue to call other institutions and make an informed and well thought out choice before saying yes to anywhere.

  • Prepare for the possibility of Clearing

It can be hard to gauge how you did in your exams so it is important to know you may need to enter Clearing. I always recommend familiarising yourself with the process and how to find universities with places on the course you would like to study.

  • Keep on top of your emails

You will probably receive lots of emails from universities you have spoken to during Clearing to help organise things like accommodation. Make sure that you are checking your inbox regularly, so you do not miss any important deadlines.

  • Check UCAS before calling

Ensure the universities you are calling offer the course you would like to study, and they still have places available. This is so you do not waste any time during the Clearing period contacting institutions where you will be unable to secure a place or study what you would like.

  • Stay on the phone

Lots of calls are abandoned during the Clearing period by prospective students because it can take a while for them to be picked up. Do not be worried if you are sat waiting for a while. This is because there will be lots of students in the same position, making the phone lines very busy.

  • Know what course you want to apply for and that you meet the requirements

Many universities offer a range of different but similar courses, so it is important to know the difference and which one it is that you wish to study. You also need to check you meet the listed entry requirements as these will be the minimum needed to be accepted onto the course.

  • Understand your course’s admission process

For certain courses such as nursing, you will have to sit an interview. This is typically the same day, so it is important to be aware of this if this is something your course requires.

Most importantly remember you will find the right path for you!
