Hello everybody, I hope you had a great start of the year!
Studying at university is great and can give a lot of freedom although this comes with responsibilities, one being managing your own time. I hope that these tips from my three years experience can help you manage your time at the best and not miss out on any opportunity. In the end, it’s all about balancing social and academic life.
SET YOUR PRIORITIES
At times, university can be overwhelming but if you take 5 minutes to write down all the things you have to do and start from the most important it will feel lighter and it will also help you keep up with deadlines.
STUDY IN A STUDY SPACE
This can be different for everybody but going to a study space, such as the library on campus can help you concentrate and avoid distractions. Everyone, there is studying, and this motivates you! The library on campus has 5 floors, it offers from silent to group study so you can find the environment that best suits you and gets your work done.
JOIN A SPORT
It can be hard to find time for some exercise when in university, especially during busy times. Joining a sport will give you the motivation to get some fresh air and get some exercise in while also participating in social activity and meeting new people. The surrey sports park is a great space for some sport and time off studying.
GO TO YOUR LECTURES
Going to your lecture will get half of your study done and it will be really easy to just revise and understand a topic after the explanation of the professor. Also, arrive at class prepared with the material that has been given, so that you can participate and understand more the content and have less work to do later.
DO NOT GO OUT EVERY NIGHT
I know it can be tempting to go out every night since there is always something going on in Guildford, but this will impact your academic life and will make you less productive the following day. Try to stick to the weekends so that you do not have classes the following day and you can also enjoy your night out without worrying about the waking up early for your classes.
FIND OUT WHEN YOU ARE MOST PRODUCTIVE
Are you a morning or a night person? Knowing this can help you get the most productive studying sessions and thanks to the 24h library on campus, you can study at any time of the day and use your most productive hours.
SET DAYS TO GET YOUR ERRANDS DONE
It is easy to get off schedule with grocery, laundry, cleaning etc during busy times, but scheduling a day of the week in which you get your errands done can help you not get to a day when you do not have any food in your house. Grocery delivery can also be really helpful if you have little time.
START EARLY AND PLAN
It is never too early to start an assignment. Starting early will avoid the excess stress before the deadline and give you more time to refine your work.
JOIN SOCIETIES
Societies usually have set times when they meet every week. This is a great way to schedule social time in your busy schedule and not forget to take time off studying.
SEEK HELP IF YOU NEED
Do not suffer in silence if you are struggling! The Hive, your personal tutor, your lecturer, the library… everyone is there to help you!
I hope this was helpful!
Bye,
Carola
