Clubs and Societies

Hello everyone ✌️

So Daniel, I wanna join university of surrey but I definitely don’t want to study 24/7, anything I can get involved with?

Well I kinda briefly touched upon this topic in one of my previous blogs, but let me delve into more details and share some of my experiences, particularly the ones I have joined.

I believe there are about 188 societies or clubs at Surrey University which I am sure at least one would be of interest to you. I joined the Arabic Society, ChemSoc (chemistry society) 👨🏻‍🔬and Surrey Taekwondo club🥋. However I am fully dedicated to the Taekwondo club since I joined them back in first year, but that is primarily because I have been practicing this martial art since I was 5 years old.

In my opinion, this is hands-down the best society I have joined. It literally feels like a family where everyone looks out for each other and try to bring the best out of everybody. It doesn’t matter whether it’s your first session or your “another-day-in-the-office” session type (me), everybody is welcomed. I personally witnessed some of my friends, who I met in first year, to have significantly improve and achieve their black belt by their final year.

Given we have an amazing 7th Dan black belt Taekwondo master, who reinforces the concept of family hood and allows students to experience the fundamentals of Taekwondo as a traditional Korean martial art.

The club also arranges various social activities where we go out as a team to AirHop for example, team dinners or classic “going out for a drink” and many more such as a friendly football game!

After a team dinner to celebrate our success at a recent tournament we took part in😍

Moreover, we take part in two main BUCS championships (British Universities & Colleges Sports) which is a valuable experience to go as a team representing your University and bring back home some medals 🥇. It somehow enables you to form stronger bonds with you friends because y’all supporting each other during and after matches for usually 2 days! We recently took part in the Autumn championships and managed to secure 2 gold 🥇 , 3 silver🥈 and 3 bronze 🥉.
