My Journey into AI: Why I Choose the University of Surrey

Embarking on a journey into the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is both exhilarating and daunting. As I pondered my options for pursuing an education in this dynamic field, one institution stood out among the rest: the University of Surrey.

After a few weeks of conducting background research on the University’s programme website, I chose to embark on my AI learning journey with the University of Surrey for the following reasons:

From the moment I explored the curriculum, I was impressed by its breadth and depth. I saw that the University of Surrey’s AI programme covers a wide array of topics, from the foundational principles of machine learning to specialized domains like computer vision and natural language processing. I saw that the curriculum provides a well-rounded understanding of AI, setting a solid foundation for my future endeavours. This was especially important for me as I graduated 10 years ago; therefore, having modules that provide a foundational understanding of this dynamic field was crucial.

Given my background working for the Communications Regulatory Authority back home, the module on ethics and regulation of AI was particularly compelling. Through the study I made, I realized that the course underscores the importance of incorporating ethical considerations and regulatory frameworks into the development and deployment of AI technologies. I saw this as one of the key skills that could significantly empower my regulatory expertise and knowledge.

Another compelling aspect of the University of Surrey’s AI programme is the opportunity for specialization. I further realized that whether it’s delving into natural language processing or exploring the intersection of AI and healthcare, the program offers a range of optional courses that allow one to tailor their education to their specific interests and career goals.

Moreover, I was fascinated by how the University of Surrey’s AI programme fosters a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment. Through seminars, workshops, and group projects, students have the opportunity to engage with peers from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, enriching their learning experience and preparing them for the collaborative nature of the AI industry.

Lastly, the vibrant learning community at the University of Surrey was a significant factor in my decision. From world-class faculty to supportive personal tutors, I knew that I would be surrounded by a supportive learning environment that would inspire and challenge me to reach new heights.

And, well, it has now been 5 months since I embarked on this journey of metamorphosing into an AI researcher, and I cannot look back but be grateful that I took this learning journey with the University of Surrey. I am confident that pursuing my studies at the University of Surrey will not only equip me with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in the field of AI but also provide me with a supportive community and valuable connections that will contribute to my personal and professional growth.
