No matter you are engaged in any discipline of study and research, if you are a very sharp-minded person, one of the great advantages of studying in the University of Surrey is that there are many inclusive academic and industry exchange environments and information sharing platforms for us to use, to strengthen our international vision, research level and academic or industry knowledge are of great help to our own study and research and even future employment. The advanced teaching and scientific research service infrastructure of the University of Surrey allows us to engage in our loving research fields easily and happily. At the same time, your peers and colleagues here may come from very diverse cultural backgrounds, and they are different in the process of getting along. Cultural exchange, mutual-learning and integration is also a wonderful experience you can get in Surrey.
First of all, there are a series of frequent conferences, seminars and even many informal “brainstorms” within the university and internal different faculties, or between universities, across academic and industrial fields, where you can choose your fields of interest independently. From this big platform you can learn the industry’s leading knowledge, technology, business model and leading scenario applications, exchange agendas and ideas with others, and discover potential partners for academic exploration and technology development together. My feeling is that, especially in the modern society with ever-changing technology applications, many previously separated fields continue to be deeply integrated and interacted. This poses new challenges to our knowledge and cognitive structure. For example, I’m now engaging in tourism planning and sustainable development, which itself is a highly divergent and complex subject, accompanied by the development and application of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, and block Chains, etc., require our researchers to have more divergent thinking and a broader knowledge system to study the application of these new technologies and their impacts on human society and life.
In addition to the school department, the school student union has also played a very active and constructive role in creating a campus academic environment. For example, starting from the end of 2019, one week of December will be set as the PGR Researcher Day of the school every year. All PGR students in the school will receive an email invitation to the Student Union Exchange Activity Center to participate in the daily breakfast meeting held this week. , While enjoying the free breakfast, you can communicate and discuss with other PGR students from different professional fields.
Faculty of Art and Social Science (简称FASS）会在每年的二月份举办我们自己的Research Festival。在这次活动中我的导师也发表了关于欧盟国家可持续发展议题ETIS指标报告。
In addition to this, it is very important that each department or faculty of the University of Surrey will have its own Research Festival. On this day, many experienced professors in the field will be invited as Key-note Speakers to give speeches on some current hot-spot fields and research topics. At the same time, there are many panel discussions on related topics that will bring scholars together from inside and outside the school to discuss and express their opinions. The audience in the audience can also interact and discuss with the guests. On the day, many surrounding areas will be set up as the venue to serve as a poster demonstration, where every scholar in school has the opportunity to use a very condensed and concise poster to show some of their recent novel research proposals or achievements. Our Faculty of Art and Social Science (FASS) normally holds our own Research Festival every February. In this event, my supervisor also gave a speech about the ETIS indicators report refers to sustainability practices in EU countries.
Also on this day, the student union of the school will cooperate with the college department to open another venue to hold a concentrated display of the posters of each subject’s post demonstration in the evening. The venue is open to all PGR students in the school. Foods and drinks are provided for free. People from outside the school will also be invited to bring keynote speeches. Here is another important occasion for researchers from across disciplines to communicate with each other and understand some current development trends from various fields.
There are also a number of academic seminars in the college or major. In our School of Tourism and Hotel Management, there will be a guest talk every week focusing on various topics, and the speakers will come from various universities in different research fields or background that have cooperated with us. During the epidemic, many of our activities were arranged online. Although face-to-face communication is not quite possible, but there’s an important advantage is that all of the contents of these seminar videos or live broadcast will be recorded and placed on the Youtube channel, which is very easily for us to save and review. In addition, the University of Surrey strongly supports every scholar to apply for funding with their own related research topics and use their own academic network to organize academic activities. For example, my colleague Gloria used this opportunity to successfully applied a funding in March this year, invited two scholars from the Netherlands Breda University to do research imagination training for us, which of course largely broadened our knowledge horizons.
