萨里大学的语言支持服务|Language Support Programmes at Surrey

For international students who come to the UK to pursue academic careers, one of the greatest challenges we may face is using a non-native language for formal academic learning. Even if their English proficiency is sufficient for everyday communication, they may still find that the gap between “everyday English” and “academic English” is quite significant upon arrival in the UK. Academic English requires individuals to communicate using precise, professional, and specific vocabulary and terminology. Teachers use rigorous and professional academic language during classes, which undoubtedly presents significant obstacles for non-native English speakers in the initial stages.

Surrey has a highly international student community. According to the UK Education Guide, as of the 23-24 academic year, Surrey University had approximately 5,000 students from over 130 countries. In other words, over 30% of Surrey University students are international students. In such an international campus, all languages are fully respected and recognized as symbols of cultural backgrounds. Additionally, Surrey University has some of the best language research programs in the UK, particularly in interpreting, which has long been ranked among the top in the UK. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has staff from around the world with different language teaching backgrounds, providing long-term language support services for all Surrey students.

[English Language Support Programme (ELSP)]

However, it also welcomes native English speakers. The aim of this program is to provide students with tailored English language support during their time at Surrey University. This program is open to all Surrey University students, is completely free, has no assignments, and no exams. Typically, ELSP courses run for 9 weeks with a 50-minute class each week, covering grammar, listening, reading, writing, speaking, presentations, and some specific language needs (such as writing lab reports). In addition to classes, the program also offers dissertation checking and one-on-one tutorials for students in need. The benefits of ELSP for students include:

  • Receive tailored English language support for your area of study
  • Access to one-to-one tutorials to support you with your written assignments, presentations, and study skills
  • Access to a one-to-one free dissertation checking service
  • The course is free of charge

Topics covered include the writing process, academic language, critical reading and note-taking, oral presentations, academic referencing, writing research proposals, and working with supervisors. At the end of the course, students are required to submit a critical review of an article in their field of expertise and deliver an oral presentation on specific aspects or areas of their PhD research.

You will have the opportunity to communicate with native speakers of your chosen language while learning about their culture. Speaking another language can enhance your future employment prospects.
