On February 8th (the 29th day of the last lunar month) in the afternoon, UK local time, the University of Surrey, with strong support from the university and the organisation of the China Office, held a series of Lunar New Year celebrations at MySurrey HIVE. Over a hundred students and faculty members from various countries gathered at the HIVE to partake in activities such as writing Spring Festival couplets, crafting the character “Fu” (fortune), receiving dumpling-making kits, and sharing traditional Chinese snacks, expressing their fondness for traditional Eastern culture and their good wishes for the New Year.
The day’s activities included writing Spring Festival couplets and the “Fu” character, with enthusiastic participation from students from Mandarin-speaking regions and keen interest from students from non-Mandarin-speaking areas. The event organisers thoughtfully prepared various templates of the “Fu” character to offer reference and learning opportunities for students from different countries and regions, showcasing the University of Surrey’s inclusive, diverse, and international campus environment. Additionally, the students present at the event were keen on explaining the traditional customs and meanings of the “Fu” and the Spring Couplets. As an international campus, the University of Surrey hosts students from dozens of countries and regions, sharing each other’s cultures, customs, traditions, and festivals daily in our beautiful university campus.
In addition to writing couplets, students also shared many traditional East Asian snacks and treats, such as spicy strips, rice crackers, Want Want Senbei, and snowflake crisps. These traditional snacks evoked fond memories and longing for their hometowns.
The event also distributed dumpling-making kits to registered participants, including dumpling wrappers and fillings. After the event, students shared dumplings and Spring Festival couplets, spreading the joy of Lunar New Year with international students from different countries and regions.
Being able to share the culture and joy of traditional festivals with classmates from around the world in a foreign land is a cherished experience in an international country like the UK.
