On Campus GP Update

GP services at Guildowns / the University Medical Centre
We have recently been informed by the NHS that the Guildowns Group Practice – which runs the GP surgery on campus and three other GP practices in the local area – is maintaining its suspension of the registration of new patients beyond the start of the new academic year. They have told us they need to do this to continue to safely provide NHS services to their existing registered patients.

How does this affect me?

This will not affect current PGRs who are already registered with Guildowns.

However, if you have registered to use NHS services at home or elsewhere since you last used Guildowns GP services you may have automatically been de-registered from Guildowns.

If this applies to you, you will need to re-register with an alternative GP practice. We know this will be frustrating, so the Students’ Union and the University are working closely together with local NHS authorities to provide clear guidance on how to register for a GP and access local NHS services. We’re also working to ensure long-term plans are in place so students have the best possible access to the health services they need.

Repeat prescriptions

If you have any repeat prescriptions with your current GP, please ensure that you have sufficient medication to cover the time before and immediately after your arrival at Surrey – ideally one month’s supply of medication. Please do this before registering with a Guildford GP, as once registered here you will be automatically “de-registered” from your existing GP practice.
Wellbeing at Surrey
You might also like to know that, alongside the services the NHS provides, the University has an onsite Centre for Wellbeing that offers support to students on all aspects of wellbeing during your time with us, including mental health support that complements services available through the NHS.

Any difficulties?
You should not encounter any difficulty registering with one of the GPs listed above. If you do, please contact the local NHS – the Guildford and Waverley Clinical Commissioning Group – who offer advice and guidance, and have assured us that all students will be able to register with one of the local GP practices.
