Company Overview The Brilliant Club (thebrilliantclub.org) is an award-winning university access charity that works with schools and universities across the UK.   The charity exists to increase the number of pupils from underrepresented backgrounds progressing to highly-selective universities. We do this by mobilising the PhD community to share its expertise in state schools.

Key Duties/Tasks Work at The Brilliant Club for placement students is varied, and we would be happy to discuss potential areas on which applicants wished to focus in advance of the placement starting. All placement students will deliver at least one Scholars Programme or Brilliant Tutoring Programme placement as part of their internship, and complete a project with a written output by the conclusion of the placement (previous examples of which include the design or redesign of courses for KS2/3 pupils, and recruitment strategies for particular subject areas).    Placement students will also contribute to the day-to-day running of the charity and its programmes, which may include: the development and delivery of ‘taster lecture’ and study skills sessions at university trips; staffing Assessment Centres for new candidates; staffing recruitment events and training weekends; the development and the delivery of ‘in-school launches’ for parents and pupils.  
Knowledge & Skills Required Candidates should currently be enrolled on a PhD programme at the University of Surrey, and have a demonstrable interest in developing their teaching practice, and their understanding of the Widening Participation and Fair Access sector.  
Skills postgraduate researcher will have an opportunity to develop Placement students working at The Brilliant Club will develop their teaching practice, and gain experience of working in the fields of widening participation and fair access, and public engagement and science communication.

This is one of 25 funded UK based placements available to University of Surrey PGRs.

Successful candidates will be paid by the university a maximum of £1,200 per month to cover living expenses.  Preference will be given to those PGRs who are not in receipt of UKRI funding.
