Chris, Aerospace Engineering
My name is Chris, and I am an aerospace engineering student at the University of Surrey. This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in a month-long Summer programme at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) in Hong Kong. During this time, I undertook an introductory course on space exploration, which not only aligned perfectly with my academic interests but also expanded my understanding of space technology and its role in shaping the future.
A summer programme is an opportunity every Surrey student should consider. My experience at PolyU was transformative, offering much more than academic knowledge. While the course on space exploration enhanced my understanding of aerospace technology and broadened my perspective on future possibilities in the field, the programme also offered a unique platform to connect with peers from diverse countries and disciplines.
Hong Kong itself was a cultural adventure. I had the chance to try a variety of local and international cuisines. Exploring Hong Kong was an exciting journey of its own. From visiting The Peak with its stunning panoramic views to the natural beauty of Sai Kung, each location revealed a unique facet of the city. I enjoyed the seamless blend of urban life with beautiful green spaces, giving Hong Kong a distinct charm.
One of the highlights of my weekends was a visit to the nearby city of Macao. Known for its vibrant mix of Portuguese and Chinese influences, with its colonial architecture, intricate temples, and bustling casinos. The contrast between Macao and Hong Kong emphasized the fascinating cultural diversity in the region.
Overall, my summer program at PolyU was an unforgettable experience that extended far beyond the classroom. I returned not only with academic knowledge about space exploration but also with memories of Hong Kong’s rich culture and landscapes. This journey strengthened my passion for aerospace engineering, deepened my appreciation for cultural exchange, and, above all, connected me with friends from around the world. I am incredibly grateful to have had this opportunity and look forward to applying what I learned in my studies and future career.
