Toronto Metropolitan University, Canada

Hello, my name is Isa and I’m currently studying Economics and Finance at the University of Surrey. Last semester, I undertook a journey to Toronto Metropolitan University in Canada. This decision significantly developed both my academic and personal life.

Why Study Abroad in Canada: Studying abroad offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a different university and culture. For me, choosing Canada was about more than just the university, it was about experiencing its diverse environment and stunning landscapes. Toronto Metropolitan University provided a solid foundation to explore my interests deeply while interacting with students from around the globe.

Experiencing Canadian Culture: Living in Toronto was amazing. The city’s diverse mix of cultures, foods, and languages made each day an adventure. One of my most thrilling experiences was snowboarding in the nearby snowy mountains, where the stunning views made for an unforgettable day. Hiking these snowy mountains offered not only a challenging physical activity but also panoramic views that photos can hardly do justice. Additionally, rock climbing beside Niagara Falls was a heart-pumping venture that brought me up close with one of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders. These varied activities not only added excitement to my days but also deepened my appreciation of Canada’s diverse landscapes and vibrant social tapestry.

I was fortunate to receive a Forever Surrey scholarship that significantly eased the financial burden of studying abroad. This financial support was crucial as it allowed me to dive fully into the Canadian experience beyond the classroom. With the scholarship funds, I was able to buy the necessary gear for the harsh Canadian winters, including a heavy coat, thermal wear, and snow boots, ensuring I stayed warm and could enjoy the outdoors comfortably.

Additionally, the scholarship enabled me to travel within Canada more extensively. I took in-country flights to Banff, a stunning national park known for its breath-taking landscapes and outdoor activities. Here, I went snowboarding, a sport that was both challenging and exhilarating against the background of the Canadian Rockies. These travels and activities enriched my study abroad experience, enhancing both my personal growth and my enjoyment, all without the constant worry of overspending. The financial ease provided by the scholarship meant I could make the most of my time in Canada, exploring its vast beauty and engaging in a range of activities that I otherwise might not have afforded.

Reflecting on my time in Canada, I wholeheartedly encourage all students from Surrey to take advantage of the opportunity to study abroad. The experience is life-changing, extending far beyond just visiting new places or meeting different people. It’s about the personal and academic growth that occurs when you step out of your comfort zone and immerse yourself in a new environment.
Canada offers a vibrant and enriching setting for these experiences. With the Turing Scheme providing extra funding, students can truly immerse themselves in what Canada has to offer without the stress of financial constraints. This support allows you to explore further, engage more deeply in local activities, and fully experience the diverse Canadian landscape.
