Spending a full year at the University of North Texas (UNT) was a life-changing experience that shaped me both personally and professionally.

Coming from the University of Surrey, I embarked on this journey with excitement and curiosity, not fully knowing what to expect. What I found was a community that welcomed me, challenged me, and helped me grow in ways I never imagined.

One of the most defining parts of my year at UNT was joining a fraternity. Initially, I saw it as a chance to meet new people, but it quickly became much more than that. The fraternity gave me a true sense of belonging and helped me build lifelong friendships. From social events and charity work to late-night study sessions and road trips, the memories we created together are some of the most meaningful of my life. Being part of a brotherhood taught me the value of loyalty, leadership, and teamwork—qualities that I know will stay with me forever.

Academically, UNT offered me a range of opportunities that helped me develop valuable skills and gain real-world experience. One of the standout moments of my year was working as a sports analyst for North Texas TV. As someone passionate about a future in journalism, having the chance to cover live sports, present on camera, and collaborate with a professional media team was nothing short of incredible. Every broadcast pushed me to be sharper, more articulate, and more confident in my abilities. That hands-on experience is something I’ll always be proud of, and it has been crucial in preparing me for a career in the media industry.

The variety of courses I took at UNT played a big role in broadening my knowledge and practical skills. I had the chance to earn certifications in Google Ads and Google Analytics—both of which are powerful tools in the modern media and marketing landscape. These credentials not only boosted my CV but also gave me a deeper understanding of how digital content performs and how audiences engage online.

Beyond the classroom and professional development, this year abroad helped me grow as a person. I became more confident, independent, and culturally aware. Living in Texas gave me a fresh perspective on the world and introduced me to people, customs, and ideas that enriched my outlook on life. The challenges I faced—both big and small—helped me develop resilience and adaptability that will serve me well in the years ahead.

None of this would have been possible without the support of the University of Surrey. The opportunity to study abroad at UNT opened doors I never knew existed and allowed me to dream bigger, aim higher, and believe in myself. I’ll always be grateful for the experience and the impact it’s had on my journey—both academically and personally.

If you’re ever given the chance to study abroad, take it. It just might be the best decision you ever make.
