Chris, Aerospace Engineering
My name is Chris, and I am currently studying Aerospace Engineering at the University of Surrey. This past summer, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Summer Programme at the British University Vietnam (BUV), located in Hanoi, Vietnam. This experience offered me an enriching experience beyond my expectations. Based in Hanoi, the programme provided not only academic learning but also a unique cultural journey that allowed me to explore Vietnam’s northern regions and its fascinating blend of tradition and modernity.
Upon arrival, the vibrant city of Hanoi quickly captivated me. Exploring the city felt like stepping into a new world, where ancient temples stood beside contemporary art spaces. Beyond the hustle of Hanoi, BUV arranged excursions to some of Vietnam’s most renowned destinations.
One of our first stops was Hạ Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Sailing through the emerald-green waters surrounded by towering limestone islands was truly surreal. The tranquillity and beauty of the bay left a deep impression on me. We also travelled to Sa Pa, a town nestled in the Hoàng Liên Son mountains. Here, we hiked through terraced rice fields and met local hill tribes, gaining insight into their traditional lifestyles and witnessing Vietnam’s incredible geographical diversity. Another highlight was Ninh Bình, where we explored ancient temples and paddled through picturesque rivers encased by dramatic landscapes.
The programme wasn’t just about sightseeing; it was an opportunity to understand Vietnam’s emerging industries. We toured several companies, including Tasco, a prominent name in the country’s infrastructure sector. Learning about Vietnam’s rapid economic growth and the challenges it faces in development provided an eye-opening experience. Seeing first-hand how companies like Tasco innovate within their fields taught me a lot about the dynamics of Vietnamese industries and the determination driving the country’s progress.
Beyond these experiences, one of the most meaningful aspects of my time in Vietnam was the friendships I formed. Sharing new experiences and exploring together, I connected with fellow students from diverse backgrounds. Each day brought opportunities to learn not only about Vietnam but also about one another’s cultures, perspectives, and aspirations.
Reflecting on my summer at BUV, I am immensely grateful for the chance to study, explore, and connect. Vietnam’s rich culture, stunning landscapes, and dynamic economy have left an enduring impact on me. This journey broadened my horizons in countless ways, and I hope to return someday to explore even more of this beautiful country.
