Hello again from Lok Kwan!
How’s your week been through?
Today is the Lantern Festival and of course it’s time for food again! Last night, I went to my friend’s flat to make sweet rice dumplings together. Tonight, I’m going to Woking for a Cantonese dinner with my friends! As you might have come across before, Jelena, another blogger of this blog, has introduced some take-away and restaurants in Guildford. However, I hardly find Cantonese cuisines around here. Fortunately, there’s one in Woking, which is another town near Guildford and it only takes a few minutes train. Another town nearby would be Reading, where you can find much more restaurants with different cuisines provided. One of the greatest advantages of living in Guildford is that London is just 35-45 minutes train away! Whenever you feel like you miss a certain type of cuisine, you can just always go to London and eat as much as you like. Besides, you can always participate in activities in London since Guildford is so close to it. This week, the London Fashion Week for autumn and winter 2016 is in full swing. It is one of the “Big Four” fashion weeks together with the ones in New York, Milan and Paris. My friends who are keen on fashion are in London these days when they don’t have lectures. For football fans, being near to London allows you opportunities to watch football games in different stadiums in London such as the Stamford Bridge Stadium of Chelsea and the Emirates Stadium of Arsenal. To be honest, I’m craving for the chance to get into the Wembley for the Capital One Cup final at 28 Feb! Unfortunately, I were not able to get the tickets and the 30th Annual Student National Taekwondo Championships is holding on the coming weekend, so I won’t be able to watch the match:(
Guildford is also close to two main airports of London which are London Heathrow and Gatwick Airport. Flights from Hong Kong always land at Heathrow Airport and it is very convenient for us to get to Guildford from there. If you successfully get into Surrey and you don’t feel like very comfortable of getting to Surrey by yourself, don’t worry, since the university offers a “Meet and Greet” airport pick up service for international students. I remember before coming to Surrey, I booked a Meet and Greet pick up at Heathrow airport by simply filling up a form of the details regarding my flight time and the arrival airport and terminal. The helpers who picked me up at the airport were friendly and nice. Even though this was not the first time studying abroad for me, I still felt a little bit anxious since this was another different environment for me. However, the Meet and Greet team just made me feel welcome and comfortable arriving at Surrey since you didn’t need to worry about transporting to Surrey carrying one or two huge luggage without knowing anyone here. They even helped out things like getting my room key and bringing me into my room. I’m sure this would make lots of international student like us to feel much better, especially on the first day of arrival. If you have any doubts or questions regarding the accommodation here in Surrey or the Meet and Greet service, please feel free to leave comments for us! Since my programme lasts for 2 years and I would certainly prefer staying in the Uni’s accommodation, I would need to re-apply for it soon. So, I may post a blog regarding accommodation at Surrey and the related things here later on.
See you next time:)
Hi Jelena, nice to meet you too x
Haha how could you mention me without letting me know!! Nice to meet you Lok Kwan (and ofc, Diana)! Are you talking about “So’s kitchen”, the Chinese restaurant right next to Woking station? Also, have you tried “Beijing restaurant” in Guildford?
Nice to meet you too Jelena! Yes, it is So’s Kitchen I was talking about but I haven’t tried Beijing restaurant yet.
